Hi families,

It was a spectacular day! For the greeting, we did high five. Also, Joshua was the person of the day. For specialists we had music and library. Also, at the end of the day we did a math exit ticket. We also did a math sprint. We had to do minus. Also our elf is on the flag. We finished Horrible Harry in our literature circle. Joshua got to play on the iPad. He played Sushi Monster.

Hi Families,

Today was a busy day. We liked building Santa getting stuck in the chimney. I think I did my best writing. I said, "plop" when Santa came out of the chimney. My Santa was different from the normal Santa, I put brown pants, green and red for the little cuffs, and blue for the boots. Even though I did red for the chimney, it is the same. We listened to some music carols by fifth grade band students. One was Old Saint Nicholas and the other one was Jingle Bells. We read a Scholastic news about evergreen trees. They are called evergreen because they never loose their green leaves.

Have a good day!

Thursday, December 17, 2015

Hi Families,

We had a lot of fun in room 217 like playing a math game with memory cards. I only got 4 matches. Noah won the game. In gym we played star wars. You sit down on the scooter and you ride everywhere. If you get hit with the ball you're out. I also got to play on the class iPad. I read two Amelia Bedilia books I brought from my house. We learned about infrences. To make an inference, you know and what the book says to figure out what is happening in the story. Ms. Petzold says it is like reading between the lines. We had indoor recess and during it we watched the Magic School bus and draw. I made two paper footballs. Tonight is our last night of math homework before break. We had a mystery reader which was Ms. Norman from the other room. She read us The Biggest Snowman Ever by Steven Kroll. We read all our non-fiction books and we were checking them (revising and editing) and I stayed at my seat for a long time editing my book. Then we had to go to snack. We are going to have a fun, fun day tomorrow. We are going to the auditorium two times. Have a good day!

Hi Families,

Today we had library and music. We did an easy math test on place value. We read A Snowy Day. After, we wrote we thought Peter and his friend did next after the story ended. I think they had a snowball fight because in the story he didn't get to do it because he didn't think the bigger kids would let him. We practiced reading a calendar and did a sheet on it.

Hi Families,

We had an awesome day today! Tomorrow is going to be our classes day on the big playground. Everyday for writing we do animal research. Today we wrote our About the Author page. Today we did pirate math. I am at the mixed addition -- almost at subtraction! We had art and we are going to make the polar express. Next week we are going color the background. I liked to make the train. When we got back from art we read a Scholastic News with a partner. I worked with Matthew because he picked me to work with. Matthew is my bestest friend. In math, we reviewed what we've learned. The four different ways to write a number are unit form, standard form, expanded form, and word form.

Have a great day!

Monday, December 14, 2015

Hi Families,

Today we learned a lot! We made a glossary for our animal books. A glossary is something that tells people about some words. We learned about number charts. In phonics, we learned about consonant blends. A consonant is any letter that is not a vowel. Ours all have the letter r in them like brown or cry. We made number chart puzzles at the end of math.

Magnificent Tuesday - December 8, 2015

Hi families,

Today we did our phonics sentences for morning work. We are doing -ew, -ue, and -ui words this week, they say "ooh." Then we went to the rug for morning meeting. We have been in school for sixty-four days. In writing, we worked our information books. We wrote about different kinds of our animals. First, we did dolphins as a class. Then I learned about different kinds of foxes -- the gray fox and the swift fox. In reading, we learned about how characters feelings change, like a roller coaster. We read Lilly's Purple Plastic Purse. Her feelings went from happy to sad to guilty to happy again. We also provided evidence from the text to show how we could tell her feelings changed. The math work was very hard today. We were comparing numbers but they were not all written in standard form. Some were written in expanded form and word form. Stewie the elf was sitting on the sink today.

Monday, December 7th, 2015

Hi families,

Today we drew pictures about our phonics words to show there meaning.

We wrote about the predators of our animals. My aniaml is penguins. There penguins are seals, sharks, and killer whales.

We started comparing numbers. 420 is greater than 320 because 4 hundreds is more than 3 hundreds. 450 is greater than 410. The hundreds is the same, 450 has more tens than 410.

We went to outdoor recess and lunch. Then we went to P.E. After that we did a math sprint.

Love,

Keilyn

Terrific Thursday - December 3, 2015

To families,

Today and yesterday we did math sprints. We try to get as much right as possible in one minute. Then we correct them, and we do another one we try to get even more than the first time right. Today, the numbers were written in expanded form and we had to write in standard form. Yesterday, they were written in unit form and we had to write them in standard form. Today we worked on word problems in math. In reading, we had to work with a partner. We practiced finding the problem and solution in Curious George books. We organized desks and informational books that we are writing about animals.

Tonight is light the night at 6:30. We're going to light the big tree in front of upper school. We are going to get free hot chocolate, cookies, and a free book -- if we are there! We can also show our families our classroom -- even Stewie, our elf.

Love,

Lillyana and Krysta :)

Stewie the elf was being an acrobat today.
Our tree of kindness. Each time a child is being caught being nice in December, they get a light bulb to write their name on to put on the tree.

Tuesday, December 1st, 2015

Hi Families,

Today we did more place value with hundreds, tens, and ones and our place value discs. We had art. I got to do math games on the tablet because I was person of the day. We learned more about verbs which are action words. We wrote about someone who lights up the Tenney. I wrote about Charlie. We made a light bulb to go with our writing.

Sincerely,
Matthew

Reminders:

Please send back your purple conference forms. I am trying to get all conferences scheduled by tomorrow.

Light the Night is Thursday at the Tenney!! The tree gets lit at 6:30 p.m. outside the upper school entrance. There will be hot chocolate, free books and your child will be able to show you our classroom! I hope to see you there!

Monday, November 30, 2015

Hi Families,

Today we cut up our place value disks. In writing, we are writing about where our animal lives. My name is Odanny and I am researching about hippos. They live in salty rivers and waters. We got an elf that is watching us to make sure we have behave. His name is Stewie. This week for phonics we are learning about long u words. They say either "u" or "oooh" like a mule says "u". A mule is a kind of donkey and looks like a horse. We read Clifford and looked for problem and solutions in it. We will be doing this by ourselves tomorrow. On Thursday night, we will be having Light the Night (at 6:30) please come! Have a good evening all dads and moms.

Sincerely,
Odanny
 Stewie has arrived!
We are working on a class informational book on dolphins the students can use as a model for their own independent books.
The prefixes we learned about during November. This is a school-wide initiative to build our language skills.
This is our page from today. All students wrote about where their animals live.
We also read Clifford Keeps Cool. We discussed the problem, steps the character takes to fix the problem, and the solution. Students will be expected to do this tomorrow independently, as we have practiced this skill several times as a class.

A Perfect Wednesday! Wednesday, November 25, 2015

Hi families,

Today was a great day because we had so much fun. I got to use Ms. Petzold's iPad. I am playing Stack the States and learning about the capitals of each state. I also played Sushi Monster. It was so much fun. It is a math game where you have to add. We did math and we did a math. The test went good but it was also very hard. We wrote letters to a special person in our family, but shhhh they are a surprise! We had so much fun today. Happy Thanksgiving!

Love,
Noah

We wrote notes to family members today to let them know how grateful we are for them. Also in their home school folders are grateful books the students have been working on throughout November. Please take a moment to read through their grateful books -- each child found so many things to be grateful for.

iPad fun -- favorite class apps: Sushi Monster (math app) and State the States (geography/social studies app)

Hi families,

We learned about math. We learned how to find how many tens are in a group of hundreds. There are 10 tens in one hundred. We did a high five greeting this morning. We went to an assembly in the auditorium. A girl danced like a ballerina. We saw pictures of us on a slideshow. We talked about what we are grateful for. I am grateful for Ms. Petzold. Tomorrow we have a math test. It’s just like our homework – so work hard on the homework!!
Have a good afternoon!

Love,
Rhianna

Hi families,

Today we learned about diagrams. Diagrams show the reader the parts of the animal. My animal is deer. We read Jack and Annie Thanksgiving on Thursday. Jack and Annie were just about to leave. They were in 1621 at the first Thanksgiving with Squanto and the Pilgrims. We got to play at recess. I was person of the day. In math, we did counting on a number line. It was tricky. We have a math test on Wednesday. We are going to practice tomorrow to get ready. I am excited for Thanksgiving because my uncle is coming. At the end of the day, we did our grateful books.

Hi Families,

Today we did pirate math. We learned about counting money in math. We used different dollar bills to get to numbers. We used hundred bills, ten bills, and one bills. In writing, we kept working on our animals. I am learning about raccoon. I like raccoon. When the raccoon is big it eats things that are really small and sometimes dead things. We read Thanksgiving on Thursday. Jack and Annie are back at Pilgram times in the first Thanksgiving. We are figuring out the problems the face and the solutions they come up with. We wrote in our grateful books.

From,
Angelina

Based on our class read aloud Thanksgiving on Thursday. It is a Magic Tree House book which is a great series for second graders to be reading! We have been analyzing the two main characters, Jack and Annie, by looking at their character traits and analyzing the problems they face and the solutions they come up with to solve the problems.

Awesome Wednesday - Wednesday, November 11, 2015

Hi Families,

We learned how to do unit form, word form, expanded form, and standard form. For the number 234 standard form is 234, word form is two hundred thirty-four, expanded form is 200 + 30 + 4, and unit form is 2 hundreds, 3 tens, 4 ones. We learned about animals. We are researching them. Our aniamls are sharks and manatees. I learned manatees play dead when a boat comes. The whale shark can be up to sixty-four feet long. Today we made the cover, too. We played  7-up at the end of the day because we were good kids today.

From,
Ave and a friend :-)

***Families, please see the purple letter that is coming home today about our new and exciting informational writing unit. Each child has chosen an animal to research and I have gotten them books about them from the library. Each day we will complete a different part of their informational book. Yesterday, we began doing research. Today, we worked on the cover page for the books. If you have a recent printed picture of your child please consider sending it in for them to use for their about the author page.

November 16, 2015

Hi families,

We did pirate math today. I think I got up to +10, I knew all my +9 facts. I was the person of the day and I had a lot of fun on the wobbly chair. In math, we learned about unit form. Unit form is where you write how many hundreds, tens, and ones. We also did number bonds. We got to look at animals and we picked three animals we would want to learn about and the teacher gets to pick one that's from our list for us to research. I hope I get raccoons. This week we are learning about long O words. We are learning about the -ow pattern like crow or grown and -oa pattern like boat and groan. I'm excited for Friday free time at the end of the day on Friday.

Thursday, November 12, 2015

Dear all families,

Today we had a mystery reader. It was Josh's mom. She read one book about Thanksgiving. She brought two ducks and one snake stuffed animals. I got a magic treehouse book and it is a tough book. We had math partners. There are colored dots for us to sit on at whole group time, mine is orange. I got to use the iPad. I played this game called Sushi Monster and you have to add up the numbers to different sums. It was pretty easy. We learned about character traits. We did a paper where we had to describe Raphael and Maya's character traits fromGoing Places We read the book twice, the second time at our desks we had to listen and think about the inside and outside traits and write them down. We are going to start writing non-fiction books on animals on Monday. I don't know which animal I want to learn about yet. We also went to P.E. We played hockey. We ran around in a circle in the gym. Then we stretched. When we were done we dribbled the hockey pucks all around the gym. We got partners to pass it around. My partner was Gabriel. We did math. If you were on 476 and need to count to benchmark numbers. So you could 477, 478, 479, 480. Then you can count by 10s, like 490, 500. Then by hundreds to 600. We did a math paper and helped our partners.  I was person of the day today and I got to do calendar and the place value chart and days in school chart.

Place Value Math in Small Groups

Module 3 Resources Now Avaliable!

Hi Families,

We have moved onto module 3 in math. I have updated the resources on the Parent and Family Resources page on this blog. This unit is all about place value. By the end of this unit, my hope is that students will have a thorough understanding of numbers, digits, and the value of each digit. They should be able to count with efficiency -- which means both quickly and accurately. This means that instead of counting by ones, we will teach students to count to benchmark numbers (also known as friendly numbers). Benchmark numbers are groups of tens or hundreds. Once at benchmark numbers, students will learn to skip count by tens or hundreds to get to their end goal. We will continue to practice skip counting -- counting at home is also encouraged! It is especially tricky to count across hundreds... for example 80, 90, 100, 110, 120, 130. Students often get stumped at 100, and say 101 when counting by tens. We will work with popsicle sticks and rubber bands to give students a concrete visual model when we are counting in class. Each time we get to ten ones, students will have to bundle together those ones with a rubber band to get to one ten. When we have ten groups of ten, we will bundle those together to equal one hundred. We will also learn many different ways to write the same number: standard form (also known as number form), expanded form, unit form, and word form.

Here is an example of each form with the number 352.

Standard form (or number form): 352
Unit form: 3 hundreds, 5 tens, 2 ones
Expanded form: 300 + 50 + 2 (looking at the value of each of the digits)
Word form: Three hundred fifty-two

I will continue to send home homework helper sheets daily. As always, please let me know if you have any questions as we move through this unit!

Also, I will be posting pictures from our Pumpkin Math Activity on Friday very soon -- stay tuned!!

Best,
Ms. Petzold

Fabulous Friday - Friday, October 30, 2015

Hi Families,

Today we did a math test. It was hard. We worked on our bat packets. We read Stellaluna. We went on the chromebooks. We did Xtra Math and Front Row. I do Xtra Math at home everyday. We watched the kindergarten walk by with their Halloween costumes on. We wrote in our Friday journals. If parents have time, they can write back. We had Friday free time, we stayed inside. We will do pirate math on Monday so study this weekend! When you get five treasures (master five math facts) you get a prize from the treasure  box. We had a fantastic week.

Love,
Juliet

Dear families,

Today was a great day! We went outside picking special leafs. We did a project and we put them on the bulletin board. We had to write adjectives about my leaves. If it is big or small or colorful. My leaf was red and orange. It is about four inches tall. I also did a good job with a lot of pluses. We also learned all about bats. It was so fun. Also we have a bat folder.

Funny Wednesday - October 28, 2015

Dear families,

We have a math test on Thursday. We went to music in the morning and we played instruments. It was fun. In music, there was a witch, goblin, and ghost. There was instruments that sounded like goblins marching, and an instruments that sounded like witches like "woooo" and the ghost sounded like "ooooooo". And the goblin was marching and Noah and Ezekiel did the drum. We went to the library and got books. I got the Absent Author which we are reading in class. For morning work we phonics sentences. We also had a bus evacuation drill this morning. We had to listen to the police officer. He told us safe things about the bus. Two eighth graders held our hands and swinged us down out the back door of the bus on a bat. We read a Scholastic news about bats. Bats are blind in sunlight. In math, we practiced word problems. They were ok.

Tape Diagrams!

Hi families,

Several parents have asked about the tape diagram strategy that has been on the homework the last few nights. This is a strategy we have been learning in class -- using the Read, Draw, Write strategy. First they should read the entire problem. Next they should go back and re-read and draw a picture to help them solve. Finally, they should write the answer as a statement. Please see the picture below for how to solve a tape diagram. Please also note how I re-write the answer at the end as a statement. It is essential that students understand what they are trying to solve for and to label their answers. Thank you so much to the families who reached out to me about this -- it is valuable feedback for me, and we will certainly continue practicing how to solve tape diagrams in class. Here is a link to a video about tape diagrams from the Eureka website: http://greatminds.net/maps/math/video-gallery/solving-word-problems-with-tape-diagrams Although it talks about third, fourth, and fifth grade tape diagrams, it is the same process we use. It will also give you a chance to see how they will be able to apply the strategy moving forward!

Please let me know if there is anything else I can do to help!

Example problem 1 - Finding the Whole: Bob has 27 legos. Javier has 30. How many do Bob and Javier have together? Draw a tape diagram to help you solve.

Example problem 2 - Comparing Two Quantities: Line M is 30 centimeters long. Line P is 42 centimeters long. Draw a tape diagram to show how much longer line P is than line M.

Smiles,
Ms. Petzold
